On August 10,2003,at 11am, my father decided to put an end to his life and threw himself into the well. My sister told us three hours later. She had gone out to get water. Holding her buckets, she noticed my father’s body lying at the bottom. It had rained a lot and the well was full. I’m 14 years old and my name is Anton Hili. I now live with my four sisters and my mother. Before we lived in the mountains in a small village called Dukagjin. Ten years age, my uncle got into a fight with a neighbor. He killed him with a stone. He smashed his skull. We had to leave our home. The dead man’s family wanted to kill us. We came to Shkodra. Since then, we have lived closed in, for fear of being killed. My father was called Voxan. He had had enough of living shut away. He threw himself down the well because he couldn’t stand it any longer. Sometimes at night I wake up thinking I can hear noises in the garden .

On April 29, 2000, at 10.30pm, Guezim Dibra was on his way home from the restaurant where he worked washing dishes. He was walking up the path his vegetable garden when two men suddenly appeared out of the dark and shot him down. His wife, Bukurie, heard the gunshots and rushed outside. Guezim was covered in blood and lying in the middle of the path. Bukurie ran towards him calling for help. The men came back and beat up the two of them. Bukurie regained consciousness in hospital; her body was covered in bruises. Her husband’s body had been torn apart.

Eliohla was Guezim’s favorite child. He took her everywhere. He even taught her how to drive and plough the land. She is a real tomboy. Guezimused to say:“Eliolha is her father’s son! Her father’s son!”

On November 28, 2002, at 3.30pm, my husband Rafiq was having a coffee not far from home when a friend came to ask him for money. Rafiq had a little grocery store in the center of Shkodra. They went over to the shop to discuss it. Rafiq refused to lend him the money. The man took out a gun and shot him in the heart. My name is Zzna Pepa. I have five children. Four girls and a boy named Saddam. They’re still too young but they’ll grow up. And one day they will be old enough to take up weapons.

On October 5, 1999, at 9.30am, Ded Hili left the house where he lived with his wife, Lina, and his daughter, Agetina, and headed for the bank. He was an accountant with a small building business and was going to collect the wages for the month. He went into the bank, greeted the account manager who dealt with the company’s accounts and collected 130 000 (1000 euos). He slipped the money into his pocket and left the bank, walking back to his office along the boulevard. He noticed a man in the distance coming towards him. When he was about ten yards from Ded, he raised his arm and tool aim. Three shots rang out. Ded Hili was killed on the spot. Lina did not hear that her husband was dead until the afternoon. She has been in mourning ever since.

10 000 people are being pursued under vendettas in northern Albania, living shut away for fear of reprisals from the hostile families. One thousand children never leave home. With the fall of the communist dictatorship in 1991, old practices from the past have returned. The Kanun, a set of civil laws written by a lord from the north of the country in the 15th century, has a strict code of revenge: if a person is murdered, his family must avenge the killing.
